Pain & Joy

Isn’t it interesting

that in going through a deep valley

 

where all is stripped away

 

we can learn what true joy is?

 

In the hurt

and the less

and the want

 

we learn to look up

 

and we find that the joy

is not really in the circumstances

 

but in the Savior

 

It’s not in the stuff

but in the Divine relationship

 

always being strengthened

by the reliance on who is in control

 

Isn’t it interesting

how pain and joy can co-exist?

 

That joy doesn’t always look

like happiness?

 

But it does look

content

 

Because of who we lean into

Drifting

Drifting away,

aimless and directionless

 

It’s where you will be

unless you actively seek Christ

 

And on the waves of this life,

the ups and downs

 

We don’t want to be drifters

 

We ought to be active in those waves

 

Seeking Truth on purpose

Loving God on purpose

Caring for people on purpose

Walking in integrity on purpose

Sharing Christ on purpose

Avoiding sin on purpose

Living out our faith on purpose

 

Intentional

 

It’s a word that God

keeps bringing me back to lately

 

As if maybe He’s doing it

on purpose?

Beyond Me

I’m thinking today

about the beyond

 

The beyond of what you did, Jesus,

from what I read about You

 

For the Bible says that the world

wouldn’t be able to contain

 

all the books written

 

if they were filled

with everything you did

 

And I long to glimpse

into that beyond

 

To see all the lives touched

all the words said

all the love given

the mercy

the miracles

 

I just want to know more of You

 

And I long to dive

into all those books that weren’t written

 

The beyond is unknown

 

But I am blessed

 

With a God who continues

to make Yourself known to me

 

In countless ways

 

And You’ve given us all the written Words

that are needed

 

for now

 

But one day I’ll know in glory

about that beyond

Life is a choice

for you today

 

Blessings are a choice

for you today

 

For you can choose a death day

or a life day

For truly living

Blessings toward others

Children

Eyes on those children

forever

 

A mama’s heart

I’ll always have

 

Cherishing them

as small

 

And cherishing them

as grown

 

Ever my treasures

ever my longing sigh

 

And we parents,

we understand the pull

 

to children small or grown

born to us, or entrusted to us

 

Their essence a gift

a glory

 

And when I hear that Your eyes, God,

This resurrection life you received from God is not a timid, grave-tending life. It’s adventurously expectant, greeting God with a childlike “What’s next, Papa?” God’s Spirit touches our spirits and confirms who we really are. We know who He is, and we know who we are: Father and children. And we know we are going to get what’s coming to us—an unbelievable inheritance!

What marvelous love the Father has extended to us! Just look at it—we’re called children of God! That’s who we really are. But that’s also why the world doesn’t recognize us or take us seriously, because it has no idea who He is or what he’s up to.

Do Not Grieve Him

It hurts my heart,

Spirit of God,

that I would ever grieve You

 

And those times

throughout my life

that my words have cut

 

and were not of You

 

I long to breathe them

back in

 

Angry words

Gossip words

Rage words

Bitter words

Malice words

Slander words

 

And I know I’m not alone

in this

 

But what it comes down to, Holy Spirit,

is You and me

and no one else

 

We are in relationship,

You dwelling within me

 

And there is no one closer

than You

 

No one

 

So You are the last One

I would want to grieve

 

Especially since You speak

such goodness

and light

Kingdom

Show me, God,

how it looks

to seek first

the Kingdom of God

 

Show me

how to lay aside

anything that distracts

 

Show me

how to live here

and seek You there

 

Show me

how to be about

what You are about

 

Show me

how to be disciplined

and to be free

in this pursuit

 

Show me

how to keep my gaze

on YOU

above all else

 

Show me, God,

Your Kingdom here on earth

So don’t worry and don’t keep saying, “What shall we eat, what shall we drink or what shall we wear?!” That is what pagans are always looking for; your Heavenly Father knows that you need them all. Set your heart on the kingdom and His goodness, and all these things will come to you as a matter of course.

But first and most importantly seek (aim at, strive after) His kingdom and His righteousness [His way of doing and being right—the attitude and character of God], and all these things will be given to you also.

What you should want most is God’s kingdom and doing what He wants you to do. Then He will give you all these other things you need.

If God gives such attention to the appearance of wildflowers—most of which are never even seen—don’t you think He’ll attend to you, take pride in you, do His best for you? What I’m trying to do here is to get you to relax, to not be so preoccupied with getting, so you can respond to God’s giving. People who don’t know God and the way He works fuss over these things, but you know both God and how He works. Steep your life in God-reality, God-initiative, God-provisions. Content

So,

if you got

that bigger house

that nicer car

that thinner body

those better roommates

that more compatible spouse

 

that thing that you really hope for

 

Then would you be content?

 

Or would you, like me,

find another reason to be discontent

once you got it?

 

Honestly, it would never be enough

 

So what do we do with our discontent hearts,

our longing for more

of what we don’t have?

 

We take our discontent thoughts captive

putting them in check

 

We develop more gratitude

 

And we live in the moment,

in the mess (sometimes)

 

and we tell ourselves

“This is enough”

 

And we find that it is enough

because

Christ is our enough

 

He fulfills our need

 

Everything else

will fade

pass away

fall apart

 

But God’s Word STANDS

when all else falls away

 

And His Word says,

the secret to being content

is

 

I can do ALL THINGS through Christ

who strengthens me

 

And that means

 

that I can live in the here and now

with all it’s annoyances and problems

 

And I can BE content

in Christ
