Today

Show me, God, how to

deny myself,

take up my cross,

and follow You

TODAY

not just in the hazy future

where intentions evaporate,

but Today

for, Lord, sometimes I forget

that what matters

is TODAY

The enemy wants me distracted

and to keep my mind

on what I might do tomorrow

and the next day

and the next

or on the past

But TODAY is important

and it is the day

I choose Who to follow

and I choose who to love

I choose

You, God,

TODAY

– Susie Stewart

Then Jesus said to His disciples, “Whoever wants to be My disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow Me.”

– Matthew 16:24 (NIV)

If you decide that it’s a bad thing to worship God, then choose a god you’d rather serve—and do it today. Choose one of the gods your ancestors worshiped from the country beyond The River, or one of the gods of the Amorites, on whose land you’re now living. As for me and my family, we’ll worship God.

– Joshua 24:15 (MSG)

You should therefore be most careful, my brothers, that there should not be in any of you that wickedness of heart which refuses to trust, and deserts the cause of the living God. Help each other to stand firm in the faith every day, while it is still called “today”, and beware that none of you becomes deaf and blind to God through the delusive glamour of sin. For we continue to share in all that Christ has for us so long as we steadily maintain until the end the trust with which we began. These words are still being said for our ears to hear: ‘Today, if you will hear His voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion’.

– Hebrews 3:12-14 (PHILLIPS)

The Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows today, you will disown me three times.”

– Luke 22:61 (NIV)

Without Restraint

What You give, God,

is lavish

and generous

and overflowing

You don’t just stop at need,

You go over

and above

and then some

You are our God of much

and we are your people most blessed

And what You give

is not always what we expect

For the world sees lavish

different

than You do

You know how to give

good gifts

to Your children

With leftovers

Not the least of which

is Yourself

Our greatest gift of all

Friend, if you think God is holding out on you,

look again

and find

Love without restraint

– Susie Stewart

Then Jesus called His disciples and told them, “I feel sorry for these people. They have been here with me for three days, and they have nothing left to eat. I don’t want to send them away hungry, or they will faint along the way.”

The disciples replied, “Where would we get enough food here in the wilderness for such a huge crowd?”

Jesus asked, “How much bread do you have?”

They replied, “Seven loaves, and a few small fish.”

So Jesus told all the people to sit down on the ground. Then He took the seven loaves and the fish, thanked God for them, and broke them into pieces. He gave them to the disciples, who distributed the food to the crowd.

They all ate as much as they wanted. Afterward, the disciples picked up seven large baskets of leftover food. There were 4,000 men who were fed that day, in addition to all the women and children….

– Matthew 15:32-39 (NLT)

…your Father knows exactly what you need even before you ask Him!

– Matthew 6:8 (NLT)

He is so rich in kindness and grace that He purchased our freedom with the blood of His Son and forgave our sins. He has showered His kindness on us, along with all wisdom and understanding.

– Ephesians 1:7, 8 (NLT)

Yahweh! The Lord!
The God of compassion and mercy!
I am slow to anger
and filled with unfailing love and faithfulness.
I lavish unfailing love to a thousand generations.

– Exodus 34:6,7 (NLT)

So if you, who are sinful, know how to give your children good gifts, how much more so does your Father in heaven, who is perfect, know how to give great gifts to His children!

– Matthew 7:11 (VOICE)

Consider the kind of extravagant love the Father has lavished on us—He calls us children of God! It’s true; we are His beloved children.

– 1 John 3:1 (VOICE)

Light Of The World

Light of the World

It is what we call You, God,

because of Your glory

Your redemption

Your Beauty

and more

And we, in whom Your Spirit dwells

are also

The light of the world

We share this title

Not on equal footing

but because we are like lanterns

in which Your spirit burns

and glows

We are vessels of Your hope

and Your glory

Your light in us

will not burn out

Just as Your glory will always

bring light

to the darkness

We are not meant to be hidden

from a world of darkness

for in that world

we are the light of it

The light of the world

– Susie Stewart

You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

– Matthew 5:14-16 (NIV)

When Jesus spoke again to the people, He said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows Me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

– John 8:12 (NIV)

The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

– John 1:5 (NIV)

But you are a chosen people, set aside to be a royal order of priests, a holy nation, God’s own; so that you may proclaim the wondrous acts of the One who called you out of inky darkness into shimmering light.

– 1 Peter 2:9 (VOICE)

Self-Preservation

Shrinking back

from people who disappoint

will only cause a tightening

of your soul

Loving and giving

without finding fault

will help keep

your heart open and free

Loving people unconditionally

reflects the Savior

Who didn’t shrink back

from us

in our undesirable state

Love and joy persevere

because of being accountable for ourselves

Walls of self-preservation

will only dim our Light

– Susie Stewart

* I am not speaking of abusive situations.  Self-protection in abusive situations is entirely warranted.

Love…does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.

– 1 Corinthians 13:4,5 (NIV)

But God put His love on the line for us by offering His Son in sacrificial death while we were of no use whatever to Him.

– Romans 5:8 (MSG)

Love bears all things [regardless of what comes], believes all things [looking for the best in each one], hopes all things [remaining steadfast during difficult times], endures all things [without weakening].

– 1 Corinthians 13:7 (MSG)

Flexibility

We who have Light

dwelling in us

of all people

we should be the most flexible

Pliable

bendable

unhardened

toward God

and people

For when we follow our Savior

He takes us places

where stiff cannot dwell

The free-flowing Spirit of God

needs to breathe through us

And this requires flexibility

to things unknown

to changes in schedule

to people unreached

Flexibility is a Spirit of God walk

in an uncertain world

It is love

when unexpected

It is Yes

when No is probable

It is the joy of the Lord

encompassing

all relationships

and circumstances

Live unbreakably pliable

– Susie Stewart

And now I have a word for you who brashly announce, “Today—at the latest, tomorrow—we’re off to such and such a city for the year. We’re going to start a business and make a lot of money.” You don’t know the first thing about tomorrow. You’re nothing but a wisp of fog, catching a brief bit of sun before disappearing. Instead, make it a habit to say, “If the Master wills it and we’re still alive, we’ll do this or that.”

– James 4:13-15 (MSG)

As a prisoner of the Lord, I urge you: Live a life that is worthy of the calling He has graciously extended to you. Be humble. Be gentle. Be patient. Tolerate one another in an atmosphere thick with love. Make every effort to preserve the unity the Spirit has already created, with peace binding you together.

– Ephesians 4:1-3 (VOICE)

One day as Jesus was walking along the shore of the Sea of Galilee, He saw Simon and his brother Andrew throwing a net into the water, for they fished for a living. Jesus called out to them, “Come, follow Me, and I will show you how to fish for people!” And they left their nets at once and followed Him.

– Mark 1:16-18 (NLT)

My Will

I bow my will

as worship

to you, God

I surrender me

my dreams

my desires

I worship You

with the bowing

I give to You

that which I wish to control

For there are things

in this life You’ve given to me

that I would not

have chosen

They frustrate

and try

and

challenge

and I would not have chosen them

but You did

And I lay it all down

knowing

that in You

I have strength for anything

in You

I can be more

in You

I can stand strong

In You

I know nothing is wasted

And the reason I know this

is because You’ve shown me before

that my will bowed

in the midst of hard and trying

means deep-set peace

and I know that You endured far more

than a mere trial

for my sake

So here and now

I bow

– Susie Stewart

Do you see what this means—all these pioneers who blazed the way, all these veterans cheering us on? It means we’d better get on with it. Strip down, start running—and never quit! No extra spiritual fat, no parasitic sins. Keep your eyes on Jesus, who both began and finished this race we’re in. Study how He did it. Because He never lost sight of where He was headed—that exhilarating finish in and with God—He could put up with anything along the way: Cross, shame, whatever. And now He’s there, in the place of honor, right alongside God. When you find yourselves flagging in your faith, go over that story again, item by item, that long litany of hostility He plowed through. That will shoot adrenaline into your souls!

– Hebrews 12:1-3 (MSG)

We must keep our eyes on Jesus, who leads us and makes our faith complete. He endured the shame of being nailed to a cross, because He knew that later on He would be glad He did. Now He is seated at the right side of God’s throne!

– Hebrews 12:2 (CEV)

God blesses those who patiently endure testing and temptation. Afterward they will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love Him.

– James 1:12 (NLT)

…constantly rejoicing in hope [because of our confidence in Christ], steadfast and patient in distress, devoted to prayer [continually seeking wisdom, guidance, and strength]…

– Romans 12:12 (AMP)

Salvation Strength

Do you know

the strength of your salvation?

Do you know the power at work

in and through you?

You were saved for so much more

than you probably even realize

Jesus’ death and resurrection

broke the power of death over you

And you will live gloriously forever

because of the gift of your salvation

Your salvation brings you strong victory over sin

and you are no longer chained to it!

You have power in Christ

to overcome sin

to stomp on it

and before Christ

you were defenseless against it

Your salvation protects you

from the enemy who wants to take you down

He has no authority over you

so resist him

Your salvation brings you life-giving freedom

from your prison cell

and you have the power

to walk in that freedom

Your salvation brings you hope

in an uncertain world

and uncertain times

and this is a strong and enduring hope

Your salvation brings you peace

making you able to stand solid in chaos

Your salvation is strength

and defense

and endures forever

There is no need

to walk in defeat

– Susie Stewart

This includes you who were once far away from God. You were His enemies, separated from Him by your evil thoughts and actions. Yet now He has reconciled you to Himself through the death of Christ in His physical body. As a result, He has brought you into His own presence, and you are holy and blameless as you stand before Him without a single fault.

But you must continue to believe this truth and stand firmly in it. Don’t drift away from the assurance you received when you heard the Good News….

– Colossians 1:21-23 (NLT)

I’m absolutely convinced that nothing—nothing living or dead, angelic or demonic, today or tomorrow, high or low, thinkable or unthinkable—absolutely nothing can get between us and God’s love because of the way that Jesus our Master has embraced us.

– Romans 8:38, 39 (MSG)

“It’s urgent that you listen carefully to this: Anyone here who believes what I am saying right now and aligns himself with the Father, who has in fact put Me in charge, has at this very moment the real, lasting life and is no longer condemned to be an outsider. This person has taken a giant step from the world of the dead to the world of the living.

– John 5:24 (MSG)

With the arrival of Jesus, the Messiah, that fateful dilemma is resolved. Those who enter into Christ’s being-here-for-us no longer have to live under a continuous, low-lying black cloud. A new power is in operation. The Spirit of life in Christ, like a strong wind, has magnificently cleared the air, freeing you from a fated lifetime of brutal tyranny at the hands of sin and death.

– Romans 8:1, 2 (MSG)

For the Lord is the Spirit, and wherever the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.

– 2 Corinthians 3:17 (NLT)

So if the Son sets you free, you are truly free.

– John 8:36 (NLT)

Embraced

You

are wrapped in Light

You who trust God

He promises

to surround you

with Himself

And if you could but see

the Lord

with His arms wrapped

lovingly

around you

fear would be dispelled

and loneliness would fade

Trust Him

and know that His angels

also encamp about you

Know the enveloping

of True Love

Know your protection

in Him

Know your position of embrace,

beloved child of perfect God

KNOW

you are surrounded

by Him

– Susie Stewart

The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear Him, and He delivers them.

In a desert land He found him, in a barren and howling waste. He shielded him and cared for him; he guarded him as the apple of His eye,

– Deuteronomy 32:10 (NIV)

You are my hiding place. You will keep me out of trouble and envelop me with songs that remind me I am free.

Just as the mountains around Jerusalem embrace her, the Eternal, too, wraps around those who belong to Him— for this moment and for every moment to come.

– Psalm 125:2 (VOICE)

For the Eternal One says, “Instead of a wall of stone, I will be a wall of fire protecting her all around, and I will be the shining glory within her.”
